Is Sushi by Scratch in Seattle worth it for a special occasion?

Yes. Sushi by Scratch is a 10-seat counter in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood serving a fast-paced, 17-course omakase tasting menu prepared in front of you. It's a strong pick for an anniversary or date night. Reservations are required through SevenRooms and book fast, and the curated sake pairing is the add-on to order.

Tucked behind an unmarked door on 6th Avenue in Belltown, Sushi by Scratch is one of the most unusual luxury dining experiences in the Pacific Northwest.

My husband Mick and I went to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary, and it completely exceeded our expectations. Here's what to know before you book.

What is the Sushi by Scratch experience like?

It's culinary theater. You sit at an ultra-intimate 10-seat counter and watch a fast-paced 17-course omakase tasting menu come together right in front of you. Omakase means you leave the menu to the chef - you don't order; you settle in and let the courses arrive. There are optional add-ons like truffles, caviar, and a few surprise options you can order at the end of the night. So expect a few additional costs before the night is over. I, of course, went all in and got every additional add-on offered and have no regrets.

With only 10 seats, it feels more like a private performance than a restaurant dinner. That's what makes it work for an anniversary, a date night, or a big celebration. Plus, you get to know the people at dinner with you and by the end of the night everyone is friends, cheers-ing and celebrating whatever special moment that brought you out to dinner right along with you.

Which beverage pairings are worth ordering?

If you book, don't skip the pairings. We tried two:

  • The curated sake pairing: an absolute must-order. It lifts each course and brings out real depth in the fish.

  • The Japanese beer box: Mick loved this one! A fun lineup of unique craft imports that paired well with the richer cuts.
